An absolutely stunning, part built De Havilland Cirrus 4 cylinder aero engine for sale. Engine to 1/9th scale. The 50 pence piece helps show the size of the engine.
The build so far is top quality and stunning in every way.
This is a one off and rare opportunity to purchase for someone.
The engine is a representation of the famous air cooled De Havilland Cirrus, and is very much a work in progress. It was started in 1993 when it was published as a constructional series in Model Engineering in Miniature. The engine described in the series was designed and produced by Eric Whittle, who went on to produce a 'V' eight version (very impressive). The "V" eight is available from Hemingway Kits if you fancy a real challenge.
After seeing it at an exhibition, and being impressed by the engine, and the fact that it was produced without castings, construction commenced and progressed well.
What is available for sale is a considerable chunk of the work done towards the completed engine. The complete crank case with bearings and tappet guides, crank shaft, cam shaft and gears are made and fitted along with the rockers (these are bronze bushed).
The cylinder head is made in one piece for simplicity, and made to look like four separate units, bronze valve guides are fitted. The finned cylinder jackets are made and blacked. Hardened and ground liners are made and ready for fitting. Material for the pistons and connecting rods is supplied, along with 0.005" phosphor bronze shim for the big end and centre crank shaft bearing. Valve springs and pushrod material are supplied. Issues of Model Engineering in Miniature with all drawings and constructional notes are included also.
The items required to be made for completion of the build are as follows ---
Pistons and rings, connecting rods, valves, carburettor and associated manifolds for inlet and exhaust and other small parts. Rather than spark ignition, it is believed that modified glow plugs were used on the original.
The completion of the engine would require the use of a small mill / lathe as the parts are quite small.
The engine is reluctantly offered for sale as it is unlikely to be completed by the original builder due to time lapsed and other more pressing projects. The engine as shown would be an ideal project for an aspiring builder to complete.
